ln February 1999, French, British
and
American scientists publicize the
true origin
of
AIDS - a very intriguing
story.
ln
1959, many poor
West
Africans had to donate their blood for
a
price.
One day, a Negro got
his
money
for the
blood but forgot
to
register.
Hence,
the sample
was
just tucked
in
one corner
ol afreezer.
More than 30
years later, this very old sample was
dug
up.
Someone decided
to
test
it
for
various blood parameters
and
discov-
ered the world's very first case
of
AIDS
way
back
in
1959, even many years
before
the
US
Centre
for
Disease
Control discovered the
first
case
of
AIDS in
1981
.
Meanwhile, according
to
the
US
Army,
they
had also caught,
in 1959, a new-born chimpanzee thal
actually
harboured
an
"ape immuno-
deficient
virus".
lt
was kept as a pet by
the
US
Army personnel,
without
knowing
that
it
was inlecled -
with
exactly the same virus as the old blood
sample.
West Africans believed that
taking
of
chimpanzee's raw
meat
and
blood would strengthen their vigor and
potency
- a
good avenue for spreading
the virus
to
humans.
