TALKING ABOUT AIDS
AIDS (acquired
immuno-defi-
ciency syndrome) was
first
discovered
in 1981
by
the Centre for Disease Con-
trol in USA and subsequently, the virus
was isolated independently in
Europe
and
in
America.
ln
1986,
the disease
name
was coined
by
the World
Health
Organization.
The AIDS virus spreads
through sexual contact, through
the
blood, and
from
mother to
the baby
in
the
womb. lt
has a
silent or
latent
period after infection; effects of
infec-
tion are: lack
of
normal immunity;
activation
of
opportunistic infections;
malignant tumours; damage
to
the
nervous system and
dementia.
Clini-
cal management starls from document-
ing
history of spread, clinical features,
laboratory tests and imaging studies.
Although at
present,
there is still
no
specific drug against the AIDS virus,
supportive therapy, immuno-modula-
tion
and
psycho-therapy
are
paramount.
lt
is
hoped
that
specific
drugs would soon be
in
the pipe
line.
Moreover, priority research
is
also
given
to
the development
of
a vaccine
to
prevent
AIDS.
Other
preventive
measures
are
to
reinlorce
public
education, strict control over
blood-
related medical agents and a compre-
hensive legal system on AIDS.
