"Panic
attacks"
refer to
a
type of
psychiatric disorder
in
which the
pa-
tient exhibits a
sudden,
unusual and
strong state of anxiety and fear in rela-
tion to a specified object or
situation.
There
is
nervousness,
sweating,
in-
creased
heart beat (simulating heart
disease) and dizziness. Although fear
is
a
common emotion, especially for
timid subjects, panic
attacks
have
these characterlstics: there
is
a defi-
nite increase of the degree of
fear
in
the indivldual
over
time; compared with
other similar individuals, the fear
is
ob-
viously excessive; there
is
active
and
progressive actions to avoid the
object
or situation;
lastly,
panic
attacks would
definltely affect
normal
work, study
or
social life. Panic attacks are curable.
Management consists of psychological
and
medication treatments, the former
often involves behaviour therapy to "ex-
pose" the individual in a controlled
fashion; the latter consists of anti-anxi-
ety
drugs to reduce
nervousness and
to
enhance
the
effect
of
behaviour
therapy. However,
all
these should only
be
performed
under the supervision of
the
physician.
