TESTICULAR CANCER
Testicular cancer atfect
males
20-
45 years
old.
Despite its malignancy,
the
management
can be
rather suc-
cessful
if
the cancer
is
discovered early
and appropriate treatment modalities
instituted, including surgery,
radio-
therapy
and chemotherapy. There is a
tendency
for
intermediate
and
late
stages to spread to pelvic and abdomi-
nal lymph nodes. Fodunately, this can-
cer is
rather
sensitive to
radiation and
prophylactic inadiation
to
the
pelvic
and
abdominal lymph nodes
is
highly effec-
tive
in
eradicating early spread
to
these
sites. Moreover, modern chemotherapy
has
definite contribution
to the
cure rate
of
certain
types
of
testicular
cancer.

note of these changes
that
are
suspicious of cancerous change of the
testis:
swelling,
hardening,
heaviness,
failure
to
trans-illuminate
upon putting
a
torch directly
onto
the swelling
(in a
darkened room).
People
with a
unde-
scended
testis
(organ remains
in
the
groin instead
of
going
into
the scrotum),
should
be extra careful, as the chance
of
such testes developing cancer
is
sig-
nificantly
higher
than
normal, even af-
ter
surgical correction
of the
unde-
scended testis.
