IS PREGNANCY
COMPATIBLE
WITH HEART DISEASE?
During pregnancy, the body's to-
tal blood
volume
and
the
output
of the
heart would increase by
about
1/3
at
the
7th
to 8th month. During
delivery,
the
intensive
pushing
by
the
mother
would
also exert
a
heavy loading
on
the heart and the
lungs.
lnappropriate
pregnancy
in heart
disease
patients
can certainly
be
detrimental
to the
baby
and /
or
the
mother.
In general,
those
patients with severe heart
disease
ex-
hibiting
brethlessness on mild exertion
should
not
be pregnant;
those with
con-
genital
heart disease without cyanosis
may become pregnant but the
risk
of
having
a
congenital
heart
disease
in
the
baby
is
higher
-
the oirinion of the
spe-
cialist should
always
be
sought.
lf
re-
ally
indicated, termination
of
pregnancy
may
be performed during
the
first
3
months; after that, both the cardiolo-
gist and the gynaecologist
should
stand
by during the procedure. ln
all
pregnancies,
regular
anti-natal check
ups are vital; take
adequate
rest, mod-
erate exercises and small, frequent
meals.
Above all, admit according
to
recommendation
-
well before delivery
to
obviate the
rush to
the
hospital.
