BY.PASS OPERATION
FOR
THE HEART
The
heart
itself
gets
its
blood sup-
ply from the coronary vessels.
When
these vessels become hardened
and
partially blocked, the heart
cells
die,
severe
chest pain results.
In severe
cases,
death
is
imminent. By-pass
op-
erations depend on the re-establish-
ment of
the blood supply
from healthy
vessels.
Each year,
50,000 such opera-
tions are
performed
in
the world. Coro-
nary by-pass operations
are
necessary
when there
is
severe obstruction to the
blood
flow
of the coronaries, usually
shown by coronary angiograms
-
injec-
tion
of
a dye
to X-ray
the
lumen of the
coronary
vessels. The
by-pass
is also
necessary whenever conservative
measures failed
to
re-establish satis-
factory coronary blood
flow. The
opera-
tion can usually be repeated, if
really
necessary, a
second or
even a third
time.
However,
those
patients
with
dit
fuse coronary artery involvement,
se-
vere heart failure, poor lung function,
poor ejection fraction of the heart, or
generalized vessel hardening with high
blood pressure and
/
or diabetes,
es-
pecially when accompanied
by
chronic
kidney failure, are not suitable for
by-
pass.
