CONQUERING STOMACH
CANCER IS NO FAIRLY TALE
Stomach cancer
is
common
in
the
40-60 age group. The
male
to female
ratio
is
2-3
to
1.
Preserved or smoked
fish, preserved vegetables, mouldy food
and their products and even excessive
salt intake are incriminated. Nitrites
and
nitrates in such food combines
with
amines
in
the
meat
to form a cancer-
causing substance (nitrosamine).
As
the
common bacterial infection (H.
py-
lori)
in
the pylorus (or exit) of the stom-
ach
is probably related, treatment
of
such infection
is
vital.
Avoid
smoking
and drinking. 707"
of
stomach cancer
patients do not
have
any
subjective
symptoms;
others
have pain
in
the
up-
per abdomen, poor appetite,
nausea,
significant weight loss
and
anaemia.
Bleeding within the stomach or
intes-
tine
results in "tarry stool".
Those
can-
cers situated at
the
cardia
(entry)
may
cause swallowing difficulties. The diag-
nostic
accuracy
of
endoscopes is
bet-
ter than
that
of
classical "Barium
meals".
The survival
after
successful surgery
lor
earliest cancers
is
90% and other treat-
ments,
eg, herbs,
chi-qong
or
even che-
motherapy are
not
appropriate for such
early cancers.
