HUMANE AND RATIONAL
APPROACH
As all patients are human,
it
pays
to adopt
a rational
approach
for
the best
control of all
diseases.
ln many
mod-
ern
countries,
the
problem of diabetes
is
managed by patients themselves
-
actively
participating
and even leading
in educational groups. Direct
involve-
ment in daily monitoring gives the feel-
ing
that medicine
is at
their door
step.
Primary
prevention
of
diabetes con-
cerns how
best
to
avoid diabetes:
re-
duce
over-weight;
quit smoking
and
drinking; take
adequate
exercises etc.
Secondary prevention
is
to discover
dia-
betes early and institute effective man-
agement,
e.9.,
by screening
for
high
blood sugar levels in middle to old age
subjects. Tertiary prevention
is
to avoid
any complications due
to
diabetes.
Such
activities
involve the whole com-
munity and professionals
like
specialist
doctors, general practitioners,
nurses,
dieticians, clinical psychologists, sports
medicine
specialists,
medical social
workers and administrators and
even
health
economists.
Activities
provided
are talks, training courses, telephone
hot lines, pamphlets and audio-visual
aids
etc.
