CAN CARDIAC PATIENTS
UNDERTAKE EXERCISES?
Body exercises can increase the
pumping action
of
the heart, improve
micro-circulation, lower blood choles-
terol
and sugar levels,
trim
body fat,
prevent osteoporosis
(weakening of
bones)
and
help
the cardiac
patient
to
rehabilitate
as
well as prevent further
attacks.
Previous activity and work can
be resumed
gradually.
ln
general,
these exercises are indicated
for
those
in
steady remission, with
obvious
symptomatic
relief
and
adequate
self-care and without any exacerbation
for at least 3
months.
Always consult
the
doctor.
Usually,
the
best
body
exercise is walking, say, 3-5
days
weekly;
30
min each (divided
if
required).
An hour after
exercise,
the
pulse
should
return
to
normal.
Exces-
sive exercises would lead to tiredness,
uneasiness, shortness
ol
breath,
loss
of appetite or
insomnia.
Avoid exercise
when hungry,
tired,
having fever
or
afterafull
meal.
All medications should
be
at
hand.
Whenever there
is
dizzi-
ness
or
chest discomfort, stop
the
exercise; take
a
rest on the spot
and
take the medication as prescribed for
such episodes.
