ABOUT CONGENITAL
HEART DISEASE
The incidence
rate of congenital
heart disease (CHD)
is
around
0.6%.
Foetal formation
of
the heart starts with
a tube
that
has
to
be
divided
by
septa
into the
chambers
of the heart by
2
months.
Anything that can atlect the
development during those
two
months
may lead
to CHD.
The
commonest
CHD
is
septal
defect.
Catching
German measles in early pregnancy
is
a
well
known
cause; others
include
alcoholism, vitamin deficiency
and
exposure
to
excessive
radiation.
As
many
drugs can cause
congenital
deformities, they
should
be avoided
in
early
pregnancy.
As CHD may, very
occasionally,
be
familial,
it is
advisable
to
examine
the
siblings
of CHD
patients.
Vaccination against Germany measles
should be done
well
before
child
bearing; pregnancy within
3
months
of
vaccination
is
contraindicated.
Preg-
nant
women must avoid unnecessary
medication.
Symptoms
of
CHD are:
lack
of
physical growth, shortness of
breath, cyanosis (turning blue) or even
fainting.
Clinical management of CHD
has gone
a
long way and
parents
should
not be unduly
worried.
Opera-
tion is life
saving
and
must
not
be
delayed.
