HOW
TO LEARN SELF.
MONITORING OF DIABETES?
Monitoring diabetes
is
very
desirable as
this would
enable early
detection
of any
related
clinical
problems so
that the
appropriate
management
can be
instituted
promptly.
Monitoring
of
diabetes
include:
fasting and
random
blood
glucose levels, urine for glucose
and
acetone, serum
lipid
(fat) profile
and
HbA1c. The
ideal
control
is
symptom-
atic
improvement;
body
weight
controlled to within 5% of the normal
range and normal physical activity.
Notice
that
HbAlc
may not decrease
initially,
as
this
reflects
the
summated
glucose
level for
the
past
2-3
months.
ln
case ol doubt,
medical
advice
must
be
sought.
The
most basic self-moni-
toring is urine glucose and
acetone
testing
by paper
strips.
Others may
wish to invest
in a
simple
blood
glucose
machine suitable
for
domestic
use.
Above
all,
regular check up by
the
doctor is
of
paramount
importance.
Thus,
Self-monitoring goes a long way
for
the
best control of diabetes
and
complication
rates
would also decrease
accordingly.
