SCREENING
FOR
CANCER.
A
GOOD POLICY
The earliest stage of cancer
is
usually without symptoms and
can
seldom be discovered
by
the
patient.
Cancer screening can detect such
very
early cancers and helps
not
only
to
lower
the
cancer
death
rate but also
enables simpler cancer
treatment
modalities.
Early cancers are easily
cured
by
simple operations
or
radiotherapy.
Later
cancers
require
multi-modality treatment like surgery
plus radiotherapy plus chemotherapy
and
yet
the
results
are
less
satisfactory.
Cancer screening
involves
normal
people who undergo the recommended
screening
programme.
The
first
established programme is the
"Pap
smear" for detecting cancer
of
the neck
of the womb for sexually active adults.
The
recommended
breast
cancer
screening for the younger
women
(below
40)
is
regular breast self-
examination
for
lumps in
the
breast.
Consult the doctor
if
there
is
any doubt
whatsoever.
For
women older than 50
years,
annual X-ray
of the
breasts
(mammography)
is currently
recom-
mended.
For
women
40-50,
a
mammogram every
1-2
years is also
worthwhile.
