BLOOD
CHOLESTEROL PATIENTS
Atherosclerosis (hardening
of
the
arteries)
is
a
common and multiJaceted
disease affecting
the
heart and
the
brain.
Cholesterol disturbance
is one
of
the
risk
factors.
ln
the
blood,
these
are cholesterol, triglyceride,
phospho-
lipids
and
lree fatty acids -
all
are
attached
to
lipo (fat)
proteins.
HDL
(high-density lipo-proteins have protec-
tive
action
on coronary
heart disease.
Older generation cholesterol-lowering
agents like the clofibrates do not lower
the
mortality of coronary heart disease
and may even
lead
to gall stone forma-
tion;
resins
could
prevent resorption
of
bile acids but
is
prone to side efiects
of
abdominal distension and constipation.
ldeal agents would lower cholesterol,
triglycerides and low-density lipo-pro-
teins
but
increase high-density lipo-pro-
teins.
Even some Chinese
herbs are
also
lound
useful.
Nevertheless, all
these
agents
still
have
some side
effects and
it
is
advisable
to
try
nutritional management plus exercises
first before taking any
of
these medica-
tions
under medical supervision.
