DIABETES CONTROL
Diabetes
is
a chronic
disease
affecting the normal secretion of insulln
(pancreatic
hormone).

poorly control-
led,
it
would gradually
be
complicated
by multi-organ
damage
like blindness,
kidney
lailure and lower limb gangrene,
etc.
One must not mistaken the con-
trol of
symptoms
to
be equivalent to
good
control.
Self-management
of
diabetes
is
necessary
as
a
tool to
closer
obsservation
on
the
disease.
Available
tools include
urine sugar
and
acetone
test strips;
urine and blood
pH
test
strips; instant blood sugar
testing;
dis-
posable fine needle injections,
etc.
The
most important index
for
self-manage-
ment is
the
blood
sugar
level.
Main
indications are insulin-dependent
dia-
betics,
disabetes during pregnancy, dia-
betics prone to low blood
sugar
levels,
etc.
"Do-it-yourself" tests are now
avaiF
able.
When done under
medical
advice, it would greatly
improve the
slandard
of management.
For
moni-
toring long-term
blood
sugar
levels,
glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) test
can
reflect
the average
blood sugar
level
in
the past
1-2
months.
All these
new
tests would contribute considerably
towards better control
of the
blood
sugar level and complications can thus
be prevented effectively.
