AN IDEAL TREATMENT
POLICY
FOR
DIABETES
Diabetes
is
a
progressive,
complicatied
and
chronic insulln
(pan-
creatic hormone) deficiency atfecting
200
million people
in
the
world.
Treat-
ment
is
individualized and
all
associated
inlective
episodes must be tackled
efficiently.
Aims
of
treatment
include:
correction
of basic fault
to
reduce
symp-
toms; optimize
body
weight;
minimize
complications, e.g. on eyes, kidneys
and the nervous system; prevent ath-
erosclerosis (hardening of
arteries).
In
the young, diabetes are "insulin-depen-
dent", but
in
the adult, the disease
is
more indolent and
oral
medication are
usually
effective.
Treat
early
to prevent
complications.
ln adults,
if
dietary con-
trol fails
to
controlthe
disease, oral anti-
diabetic agents are required, but
in
cases
of
secondary failure", insulin may
still be
required.
lnsulin is useful for all
juvenile diabetics, resistant adult dia-
betics, diabetics with acetone acidosis,
prevention of chronic complications,
e.g. ol the nervous system, severe dia-
betics
or
those going for
major
opera-
tions, secondary diabetes or diabetes
resulting from severe
pancreatic
destruction.
