(oGTT)?
ln normal people,
after
taking
a
meal, rise of blood sugar level would
stimulate insulin (pancreatic hormone)
secretion.
OGTT: take a large dose
of
glucose
to
challenge
the
reserves of
insulin. After
the
dose
of
glucose, blood
is
taken
at
30,
60,
120
and
180
minutes
for
sugar
level.
Belore
the
test,
fasting
for
10-16 hours
is
required;
smoking is not
allowed.
Avoid exer-
cises. lndications for OGTT: those with
sugar
in
the urine
but
fasting or after-
food blood sugar levels are
normal
or
borderline; lollowing
up
those with
re-
duced OGTT: suspected diabetes of
pregnancy;
family
history, habitual
abortion
or
foetal death or overweight
newborns.
lf
diabetes
is
already con-
firmed, there
is
no need
to
perform
OGTT.
Patients with abnormal
OGTT
need not worry; go
for
regular check
ups;
have
strict diet control,
and
regular exercises, then
frank diabetes
can be prevented.
