EATING BUT
NOT
TASTING
FOOD
When
a
person
is
unduly worried,
he may not taste food normally
-
this
phenomenon of
the
mind atfecting
the
body has
already
been
well
described
in Chinese history
more
than
2,000
years
ago.
The taste
oflood
is
appre-
ciated
by the
tongue, and the
nose.
Different animals have quite different
smell capabilities,
e.9.,
dogs
are
superior to
man;
the same species also
has different sensitivities
to
different
smells.
There
is
also
a
natural adapta-
tion
so
that
a persistent smell would
gradually
lose
its
stimulation. There are
10,000
taste
buds on the tongue re-
sponsible for tasting sweet, salty,
sour
and bitter or a combination
of
tastes.
Children have
more
taste
buds and
fancy
sweet
tastes;
but
taste diminishes
with age whereas pregnant
women
fancy
sour
food.
Evaluation
of
food
usually requires combining
the
function
of
the
nose and the taste buds
and
finally analysed and aggregated
by
the
brain.
lf
one
is
unduly worried,
not
only
is the
taste
blunted but also strange
tastes would appear.
