AVOID
REDUCING
HYPERTENSION RAPIDLY
Hypertension in the older patient
is, to
a
certain
eltent,
a
compensatory
mechanism
to
ensure adequate blood
supplytovital organs.
However,
as
new
pharmaceutical products
managing
hypertension are now more etfective
in
controlling high blood pressure
and
its
complications, reduction of hyperten-
sion
too
rapidly can result
in
circulation
disturbances affecting the
brain,
the
heart and the
kidneys.
An important
index of
too
rapid blood
pressure
reduction
is
the clinical manifestations.
The
patient
feels excessively
tired,
have
postural hypotension (excessive dizzi-
ness on getting
up
from bed),
have
electro-cardiogram evidence of
insutf
i-
cient
blood supply to
the
heart, or
raised
blood urea nitrogen level,
etc.
Hence,
other than
emergency
treatment for
critical conditions, too rapid
reduction
of
hypertension
is
actually harmful. This
is
especially true
in
the elderly
or
those
with atherosclerosis (hardening
of
the
arteries).
Blood pressure should
be
reduced gradually so that the patient
does
not have
any
untoward clinical
manifestations at all.
