AN ON.THE SPOT
REPORT
ABOUT TRANSPLANTATION
OF
THE HEART
AND THE
LUNG
The author of
the
paper visited
recently
the
Heart
Center
in Berlin,
Ger-
many, and
had the
opportunity
to
watch
an entire
operation
process of
cardiac
transplantation. The
patient
lor trans-
plantation surgery was
a
16-year-old
Polish
girl.
Her heart failed
to
respond
to the most rigorous medical measures
due
to
her congenital heart disease.
After four and half hours, the operation
had been accomplished successfully
and her heart beat restored following
the operation. lt
was
really a marvel-
ous
surgery.
Transplantation of
the
heart has now been successlul in more
than ten thousand instances in
the
world.
Current results suggest that car-
diac transplantation is comparable to
transplantation
of
the cadaver kidney
and
that
results
certainly will
improve.
However, the question
ol
ethics and
morals raised
by
the removal
of a
heart
capable of sustaining life in another in-
dividual has
been
discussed by
many
medical and lay
authors.
lt has
been
reasoned that
if
"death"
of
the brain has
occurred, as evidenced by
lack of
elec-
trical activity
in
the electroencephalo-
gram over
a
sufficienty long period, the
ability to maintain respiration
or
cardiac
output
by
artiticial methods
is
academi-
cally
possible.
Once
the
decision
that
the heart should
be
transplanted
has
been made,
the
donor
can
be main-
tained
until
the
recipient
is
ready for
operation.
