MENTAL
CHANGES
Transplantation
of the
human
heart is now
a
justified surgical
proce-
dure for the treatment
of
advanced
(end-stage) heart
disease.
Up
to
now,
surgeries
of
cardiac transplantation
have been successfully performed
in
more
than
10,000
cases
in
the world.
An
analysis based on these
cases
shows an
80-85%
1-year
and 50-70%
S-year
survical
rate after
transplantation
of
the
heart.
lt
is
said that there will be
a mental change
in
the recipient atter
cardiac
lransplantation.
lt has
been
suspected that the heart may also play
a
role in regulating mental activities.
Thus, pattems
of
donor's mental behav-
ior
and personality
may transfer to the
recipient, resulting
mental
changes
of
the
recipient.
However,
it
is
generally
accepted
to
that
mental
activity
is a
form
of function of the
nervous
system.
There is no substantial evidence show
thatthe
human
heart
manages
anyform
of
mental
activities.
Thus, we
believe
that the
mental changes
following
a
cardiac transplantation may
be
just
a
result of changes
of
cerebral function
due to decreased blood supplies to the
brain during the surgery.
