SUPPORTIVE CARE
IN
MANAGING THE PATIENTS
WITH MALIGNANT TUMORS
During the past 50 years, there
has been
a
steady increase
in
the inci-
dence and death
rate
ol
malignant
tu-
mors.
According to statistical
survey,
malignant tumor acored seventh
or
tenth
in
the
1950s
to the current sec-
ond or third as the death causes
in
the
world.
lt
is also
the
leading cause of
death
in
persons between
age
thirtyJive
and
fifty{ive.
Thus, malignant tumor is
among
the
major
threats against
peo-
ple's
lile
and health.
The management of the patient
with malignant tumor has
improved
through the use
of
new techniques.
However, the
treatment
ol
cancer
is
complex and requires
the
knowledge
and skills
ol
multiple
disciplines.
Mal-
nutrition
is usually a serious complica-
tion in
patients
with
advanced carci-
noma.
Furthermore,
the
recognition
of
an incurable disease has a profound
psychological and
socio-economic
im-
pact on the
patient.
These
aspects
must be appreciated and corrected
for
the
successlul
managementof
cancer
patients.
lmprovement
in supportive care,
including substantial sympathetic
and
nutritional supportive therapy, has
re-
sulted
in
prolongation ol etfective sur-
vival.
The
physician should provide
hope encouragement,
understanding,
sympathy and
support.
Principles of
psychological, nutritional, medical and
professional management
lor
cancer
patients have been discussed
and
briefly reviewed in
the
present paper.
