THE SUGGESTED WAY
OF
DAILY LIFE
FOR
PATIENTS
WITH
HYPERTENSION
Extensive
studies
have demon-
strated that emotional environtal stress
may be responsible
for
the develop-
ment of high blood
pressure.
lt
may be
argued
that
it is difficult to show con-
clusive
benefits of drug
therapy
in
some
patients with
only
slight pressure eleva-
tion.
lt
has been suggested that the
choice
of
treatment
is
such that
a
satis-
factory program to control arterial pres-
sure
with
minimal
side
effect
can
be
developed.
Patients
with
labile hyper-
tension, or borderline or mild hyperten-
sion
(a diastolic blood pressure <12-
13.9
Kpa,
or
<90-104 mm
Hg) should
have regular follow-up examination and
general measures should be recom-
mended.
Relief of emotional and envi-
ronmental stress is one
of
the meas-
ures
that
may improve
to
reduce el-
evated blood
pressure.
Patients
should
be
advised to avoid any unnecessary
tensions.
ln some patients it may
be
appropriate to recommend
a
change of
job or
life
style.
Dietary management
includes dietary sodium and caloric re-
striction, increase
in
potassium
intake
etc.
Regular exercise
is
indicated
in
every
patients
with mild
hypertension.
Alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking
should be restricted
or
prohibited.
