ACONITE
POISONING
Aconite belongs to the plant
genus (Aconitum)
of
the buttercup
family, with blue, purple,
or
yellow
hoodlike flowers, and
most
of
them
are
poisonous. lt
may
cause
se-
vere symptoms due to intoxication
including
respiratory
failure
and
heart
arrest.
Aconite
is
formerly a
drug
made
from dried
roots of
monkshood
and
is used as a car-
diac and respiratory
sedative.
Preparation (including
cooking)
can remarkably
reduce
the toxic-
Ity of
the
herb.
ln
traditional Chi-
nese medicine,
aconite
is used
to
dispel cold and wind and, there-
fore, to reliel pain
for the
treatment
of
serious
rheumatalgia, cold and
pain
in
the
abdomen.
Two kinds
of aconite are
found
in
China,
i.e.,
Sichuan Aconite
Root
and
Wild
Aconite Root.
The wild
one
is
de-
cidedly
toxic
more
toxious
than
that from Sichuan
Province.
Thus,
the dose
used in
traditional
Chi-
nese medical
practice
is usually
much smaller for the
wild
one.
