THE
''FIVE BROTHERS''
OF
LEUKOCYTIC
SYSTEM
Numerous
blood cells
are
continuously circulating
within
the
vessel system,
including
the
red
blood
cells, white
blood cells
(named
as leukocyte
in medicine)
and platelets
etc.
Unlike the
red
corpuscles, the leukocytes do
not
carry out their chief
function
in
the
circulating
blood.
The
known ma-
jor
function
of
the system
is
to
de-
fend
the
body from foreign materi-
als by means of phagocytosis and
antibody
formation.
There
are
five
types of leukocyte, i.e., monoc)des
-
the "big brother", neutrophils
-
the
well-known "second big brother",
and
the
other
two
"younger
broth-
ers" -
eosinophils
and
basophils
are all
phagocytes,
while
the
"youngest brother" - lymphocytes
are concerned with antibody
pro-
duction.
Thus, each
of
these five
types of leukocyte plays
a
distinct
and
unique
role in body defense
mechanisms.
Clinically, physicians olten
ask
their patients to check the to-
tal
and individual numbers of the
leukocytes (white blood cell count-
ing and differential counting)
in
or-
der
to make
a
correct diagnosis
for
the
sickness.
