Uterus, or
generally
called
the
womb, is a pear-shaped,
hollow,
muscular organ
of the
female
mammals,
in
which the
ovum
is
de-
posited and the new life, the em-
bryo and
fetus,
are developed.
The
uterus
lies
in
the
midline
of
the pelvis between the bladder
in
the front and the rectum behind.
ln the
adult it
measures approxi-
mately
7
to
I
cm
in length,
while
it
weighs from 40 to 60 grams
in
the
multipara.
The
periodic physi-
ologic bleeding,
menstruation,
from the uterus serves the
practi-
cal purpose of casting
off
the
un-
used
secretary endometrium
of
the
uterus
so
that a new proliferating
one may arise from the basal layer
of
the
organ.
The gravid
uterus
harbors the products
of
conception
until the fetus attains
a
state
of
optimal maturation necessary
for
extrauterine
existence.
As yet
there
has
been
no
complete under-
standing
on
the physiology
of
the
uterus.
The genital
function
in
the
adult are
modified
and influenced
by a precise neurohormonal regu-
latory mechanism.
