Many gout subjects show evi-
dence of complications including
articular and renal
disease.
The
renal
disease
is
common and
is
usually due
to
the abnormalities of
purine
(a base
for nucleic acid syn-
thesis) metabolism and
its
exces-
sive production resulting deposi-
tion of
urate in
the
kidneys.
Pa-
tients with even
asymptomatic
hyperuricemia
should
be
treated
with
medicine before
articular
or
renal complications
develop.
Al-
lopurinol
is
usually employed
for
the
patients.
However, allopurinol
does not help to imProve
albuminuria.
ln China, many
Pa-
tients with renal complications due
to
primary gout have been
treated
with
traditional Chinese
medicine,
and
the
results are encouraging.
The
present paper reports a
study
conducted in
47
goul cases with
real disease
in
Shanghai,
and
found that
"Yi
Shen Bao"
(it
means
a treasure
good
for the
kidney
function),
a mixture made of
tradi-
tional Chinese herbs, is effective
in reducing protein losing from
the
urinary
tract.
The
mechanism
oI
the compound on kidney function
is
also
briefly discussed.
