SENILE
DEMENTIA
Senile dementia is
most
fre-
quently a disease
in
the
late stage
of
life.
This condition, classically
described in
19OO
by Alois
Alzheimer, has since become gen-
erally
known
as the
Alzheimer's
disease.
Typically, the
brain of
the
patient presents a
generally
shrunken appearance (atrophy),
which
is as a
general rule
associ-
ated with some evidence
of
dementia.
The noteworthy
fea-
tures
are as follows:
(1)
the onset is usually insidi-
ous and subtle, with changes most
noticeable
first
in memory
for
re-
cent
happenings and
in
range of
mental
activities;
(2)
emotional dis-
turbances such as depression or
anxiety states, or odd, unpredict-
able
quacks
of behavior
may
be
salient
features
in
the
early stage;
(3)
progression
is
very
slow and
gradual.
However, long before the
end of life, institutional care
is
nec-
essary.
This type
of
degenerative dis-
ease
of
the
brain has more
detailed
elucidation
of
the nature, classifi-
cation, treatment and prevention
in
the present
paper.
