HYPERIIPIDEMIA
The lipid
in
plasma
of
major clinical
importance
are
cholesterol
and
triglycerides.
They are usually
combined
and
transported
in
the
blood
with
phospholipids
and
certain
proteins
such as
apoli-
poprotein.
ln
general,
hyper-
lipidemia
is
associated
with
increased incidence
of
prema-
ture
ischemic
heart
disease
(lHD).
Hypercholesterolemia
has been studied most
exten-
sively.
lt
correlates
highly
with
the
risk
of myocardial
infarction
(the
severest
form
of
IHD)
in
both
men and
women.
The
concentrations
of
low-density
lipoprotein
(LDL,
generally
called
"bad or
malignant chol-
esterol")
have
a
positive corre-
lation
with
lHD.
ln
contrast, the
concentrations
of
high-density
lipoprotein
(HDL,
so
cailed
"good
or
benign
cholesterol")
are
negatively correlated
with
IHD.
Today,
good
health
main-
tenance practice demands
a
test
for
detection
of
hyper-
lipidemia in all persons beyond
twenty
years
of
age.
Generally
available clinical
tests
include
determination
of the
con-
centration
of
cholesterol
and
lipoproteins
in
blood.
Serum
apolipoprotein analysis may
be
the
more
helpful method
for
sharper identification
of
differ-
ent
metabolic
bases
for
hypercho lesterolemia.
