INSULIN
THERAPY
ANI)
THETR
PREVENTION AND
MANAGEMENT
lnsulin
reaction
are
com-
monly
caused
by
excessive
dosage,
delayed
food
intake,
or
unusual
exercise.
Very
rarely,
an
increased
sensitivity
to insulin
is
due
to
early
adrenal
or
pituitary hypofunction.
Oc-
casional insulin
reactions
are
almost
unavoidable, especially
in
juvenile
insulin-sensitive
diabetics, but they are
inoffen-
sive (no great harm)
if
recognized
early.
To
reduce
them
to a
mini-
mum,
it
is
essential
that
the
patient knows
how
to
test
his
urine
for
glucose
and,
if
pro-
vided he does not
have
an
el-
evated
renal threshold
for
glu-
cose,
then how
to
reduce
his
insulin dose
when
his
urine
tests
indicate absence
of
glu-
cose
for
several days.
The
patient also
must be
instructed
to
eat
his
meals
on
time,
and
when unusual physical
activity
is
anticipated, either
to
reduce
his
morning insulin dose
or
to
ingest extra
calories
to
com-
pensate
for
the
blood-sugar-
lowering
effect
of
exercise.
