STROKE
The cardinal
feature
resulting
from
cerebrovascular
disease
is
the
stroke,
a
term
which
connotes
the
sudden
and dramatic development of
a
focal
neurologic
deficit.
The
syndrome
rank
first in
fre-
quency amongst all
the
neuro-
logical
disease.
lt
accounts for
an
annual incidence
of one and
half
millions
and
about
one
million
death
in
China.
An
estimation
of
annual
cost
is
about
1
1.2 billions
of
Chinese
Yuans.
ln
its
severest
form,
the
patient
becomes
hemiplegic
and
even
unconscious.
ln
its
mildest
form,
it
may consist
of
only
a
trivial
neurologic
dis-
order
insufficient
to
disturb the
customary activities
of
the
patient
or
to
demand
medical
attention. Many
manifestations
other
than
a
hemiplegia,
in-
clude
headache,
numbness,
sensoty
deficit,
dysphasia,
blindness,
diplopia,
dizziness,
and
dysarthria may
be so
mild
that they
do
not
attract
notice
until their
cumulative
effect
become
manifest.
When
the
patient
is
seen
early
in
the
course
of
stroke,
it
is
extremely difficult
to
give
an
immediate diagnosis.
Careful
observation
should
continue
until
the
condition
gradually
stabilizes
and
the
diagnosis of
stroke
is
completely
excluded.
