HYPERTE}ISI()N SEC(}NDARY
T() ADVERSE DRUG
EFFECT
ln
patients
with
hyperten-
sion an
increased use
of
vari-
ous drugs
for
other purposes
is
commonly encountered.
To
in-
stitute
the
proper
therapy
for
these
patients,
it
must
be
emphasized
that
many
of
these drugs may
be
hypertensionogenic.
For
in-
stance, agents
like
gluco-
corticoids, the
estrogen
component
of
oral
contracep-
tives, analgesis,
MAO
inhibitors
and the
commonly
used
Chinese herb
glycyrrhiza
uralensis,
these
are
identified
as
responsible
for
secondary
hypertension
in some
patients.
When
a
patient taking
these
agents presents
with
hyperten-
sion,
the
agents
should
be
discontinued
so
that their con-
tribution to
the
problem can
be
assessed, and
they should
not
be
prescribed
for
those
with
high
risk
of
hypertension
and
related
problems.
