Rheumatoid
arthritis
(sub-
sequently abbreviated
RA)
is
a
chronic systemic
disease
of
un-
known etiology,
manifested pri-
marily
by
inflammatory
arthritis
of
peripheral
joints.
Systemic
manifestations
include
he-
matologic, pulmonary,
neuro-
logic, and
cardiovascular
ab-
normalities.
Thus,
the
patient
and
his or
her
family should
be
given
a
clear
understanding
of
the
chronic
nature
of
RA
and
the
value
of
careful
and
con-
tinuous
medical supervision.
The
goal
of
therapy
is
to
maintain
the
patient's ability
to
function.
To
accomplish
this,
every effort
should be
made to
reduce
joint
inflammation
and
pain,
prevent
joint
deformities,
maintain motion
and
strength,
and
correct
deformities.
The
proper utilization
of
anti-inflam-
matory drugs along
with
physi-
cal
therapy
will
enhance
the
patient's
ability to
continue
functioning
at
an
independent
level.
