BONE
Osteoporosis
is the
term
used
to
describe
a
group
of
bone
diseases
which
are
characterized by
a
reduction
in
the
mass
of
bone
per
unit
volume
to
a
level below
that
required for adequate
mechan-
ical
support function. Amongst
the
elderly, usually after
the
age
of
forty
or
fifty,
their
skeletal
mass begins
to
decline
at
a
faster
rate,
especially
in
women
after
the
menopause.
lt
is
not
clear what
is
the
exact
cause
of
this age-associated bone
loss.
The most
frequent
symptoms are pain
in
the
back
and
deformity
of
the
spine.
Fracture
of
long
bones,
most
common
in
the
hip,
humerus,
and
wrists, are
also
somewhat
more frequent
in
osteoporotic
patients.
Estrogens
and
calcitonin
are often used
to
treat sympto-
matic
osteoporosis. Other
pre-
ventive measures
include
use
of
oral
calcium
preparations
with vitamin
D
and
supervised
physical
exercise.
Adequate
solar radiation is
also
suggested.
