In Mid Summer: Attend to Your Mind, Not Just Your Body
The uncomfortable heat of mid-summer makes one easily tired and agitated. According to TCM concepts, during mid-summer, one
must also attend to the mind – primarily by calming down so that the whole body feels cooler. Apart from predisposing to agitation,
the uncomfortable heat also makes one emotionally unstable; even the immunity may become suboptimal. In severe cases, there may
even be angina, irregular heart beats and high blood pressure! Keep an open mind; Practice forgiveness so that you would cool down –
never let go your temper. When feeling irritable, try closing your eyes and meditate. Visualize a pool of cool water, the green forest and
the blue sky. Try to communicate with rather than to blame other people; avoid direct confrontations; manage your tension; chat more
readily. Engage in your favorite sports; take part in physical competitions whenever feasible so as to ease your mind; play tai chi; listen
to music; engage in choral speaking; go picnicking, etc. Give out your tender loving care to the family: being humorous goes a long
way! If nothing works and depression symptoms last for 4 or more weeks, consult your doctor.
