The Commendable “Combined Laparoscopy & Enhanced Recovery After Surgery”: Opinion

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) involves many facets: before surgery, ample communication with the patient; adequate
nutrition support; use spinal anesthesia (mid-thoracic epidural analgesia) rather than general anesthesia; use minimally invasive
surgical techniques; avoid opioid (narcotic) pain killers; prompt use of mild laxatives to promote gut movements enables early feeding.
The major advantage of “combined laparoscopy (keyhole technique) and ERAS” is less patients’ suffering: they may now take food even
before surgery, drink electrolyte water 2 hours before surgery: thus eliminating feeding tubes, urinary catheters and abdominal drainage
tubes and even the necessity of prolonged intravenous fluids / nutrition: swelling of the digestive tract is also avoided. Patients may
now be discharged in 3-5 days instead of the usual >10 days. Thus, the principle of combining minimally invasive surgery and
enhanced recovery benefit the Country and patients alike. Last year, the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the
State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine made a combined proposal to implement enhanced National medical and health
services over a period of 3 years: this would go very well hand in hand with enhanced recovery after surgery.
