Arthritis: the World’s Top Disabling Disease
Amongst various arthritis types, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tophi due to gout, ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis and
arthritis due to ulcerative colitis, etc., pitfalls abound: (1) Indiscriminate mobilization of painful muscles and joints (2) Although
“dampness” and “wind” are often blamed for arthritis, the routine use of moxibustion and cupping are inappropriate as these only
serve to increase body production of endorphins so that pain is relieved but specific treatment is entirely lacking (3) Although
physical exercises are good for our health, during the acute episode of arthritis, rest and medications to sooth the pain are much
more appropriate (4) Although food therapy is popular, the taking of pork knuckles and tendons is of little use. Effective ways are: (a)
Take regular physiotherapy and massage (b) Protect traumatized joints when having physical exercises (c) Wear shoes with adequate
cushioning effects to reduce the stress on the joints (d) Indulge in appropriate exercises, e.g., developing the quadriceps helps to
maintain best knee function. For the diet, avoid seafood and oily, sweet food items; take more leafy greens and animal livers for best
joint health; take more milk for its calcium content; fibre-rich food items also help to purge waste products.
