Beware of 7 Common Infectious Diseases in Spring
Bird flu presents as high fever, cough, running nose, muscle ache and even pneumonia; stay away from birds (especially dead ones),
fowls and their excreta; cook them (and their eggs) thoroughly. Zika infection spreads by mosquito bites: 80% are latent; others have
fever, rash, muscle ache, joint pain and weakness 3-7 days later. Measles has 4 phases: (1) Latent: with mild fever for 10-14 days (2)
Prodromal: 3-4 days: “cough and cold” symptoms (3) Rash: high fever with small, scattered, pinkish rash spots; becoming larger,
darker; initially found behind the ears, after 24 hours, spread to the face, body, limbs, the palms and soles: all in 2-5 days (4) Recovery:
3-4 days after rash, healing takes 7-10 days. In kids, measles are more severe: may involve the liver, heart and the gut. Measles
spreads readily, often to kids by air borne droplets. Hand foot mouth disease occurs in babies and kids: due to various gut viruses,
especially EV71: fever, rash and vesicles on skin and the oral mucosa: wash hands and ventilate room. Mumps often affect the parotid
salivary glands below the ear lobes: may affect the ovaries or the testes causing infertility. Although chickenpox is usually mild, in the
very young and the infirm, skin and blood infection, pneumonia, meningitis may occur. Take care!
