Hitting the Disease in the Head: An Interview with the Heir of the Yangzhou City
“Qian School” of Pediatric TCM: Prof Li YaoQian
Physiologically, pediatric patients are relatively immature and imperfect and yet with robust growth
potentials. On the other hand, the pathological characteristics of pediatric diseases are: (1) Prone to
diseases (2) Rapid change of condition (3) Good potential for recovery (4) Unique immunity characteristics
(5) Peculiar psychological setup (6) Congenital factors most relevant (7) Accident prone (8) Environmental
and food contamination factors (insecticides, steroids, radiation, etc.): effects may also affect the very young
and even the fetus; even iatrogenic or medical negligence may contribute. For comparing TCM and Western
pediatrics, note: (1) TCM involves syndrome differentiation for treatment (2) TCM focuses on holistic
abnormalities (3) According to the urgency of the situation, TCM may be able to use items like acupuncture
in combination with concoctions for the best results (4) TCM may supplement subtle deficiencies deemed
non-essential by Western medicals, especially parenteral ones (5) TCM may well supplement certain
deficiencies of Western medicine, especially problems posed by the more and more prevalent antibiotic
resistance (6) For certain categories of pediatric diseases, TCM has better treatment results than Western.
