The Basics & Applications of Gao Fang
Gao fang is an effective method of administering traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for senile cardiovascular diseases and common
lifestyle diseases. Gao Fang is one of the most common methods of administering TCM. The paste mixes gelatin or honey with a TCM
decoction after boiling: it has better taste and longer preservation periods. Gao Fang may be for internal ingestion or topical application:
for external treatment for internal diseases, gynecological disorders and skin diseases like sores and ulcers. Effects of ingested gao
fang include nourishing health, recuperation, prevention and treatment of diseases: the specific formula is very personalized: with very
different formulae for vastly different individuals, diseases and general conditions, all according to: (1) Patient’s physique (2) Concept
of yin yang (3) Spleen and stomach status, especially the appetite (4) In addition to nourishing, should pay attention to activate the
circulation and resolve blood stasis. Methods of using gao fang are: (a) Use boiled hot water to dissolve it before ingestion (b) By
steaming it, mixed with an appropriate wine or concoction (c) Let it dissolve in the mouth for some local effects, e.g., pharyngitis or
sore throat. Gao Fang provides a unique advantage over other forms of TCM.
