CHEWING IS GOOD FOR THE BRAIN
Our teeth not only assist our digestion but also our brain function - chewing involves masticator muscles; our tongue distributes
and molds our food appropriately; through reflexes, our brain is also activated. Japanese research workers found a nervous
connection between our gum and the brain, especially the memory area. At the Nagoya University, Japan, 11-week old white
rats made edentulous had significantly more dementia symptoms by 110 weeks. In Sweden, a study on 1962 volunteers aged
35-90, by 15 years, edentulous subjects had significantly poorer memory. Research workers at the University of Kentucky, USA,
found out that a long-term follow up on 114 Catholic Sisters, among those left with <10 teeth, 1/3 already have dementia - the
incidence rate was twice higher than those with >10 teeth. A Denmark study found out, in Copenhagen, among 573 subjects
aged 70, those with >20 teeth have a significantly lower possibility of being incapacitated in the next 5-10 years. Clearly, paying
attention to dental hygiene, chewing meticulously would go a long way towards prevention of dementia - do not let any of your
tooth go easily!
