MEDICINE: LAOZI'S DAO DE CHING AND THE PRINCIPLE OF TCM LIFE NOURISHING
The Chief Editor took pains to interview Prof Qiu who has the most illuminating view on the captioned relationship. Dao came
before heaven and earth; from the Nature itself. The Dao of heaven is the Nature; the Dao of mankind is to be a "non-striver": all
under Nature's laws. The application of Dao is manifold, medicine included. All matters are relative, e.g., win and lose; heat and
cold; yin and yang, etc. - the basis of TCM practice. Even the principle of treating diseases before their formation came from
Laozhi's philosophy. Mankind must always submit to Nature: the basis of TCM's life nourishing strategies; the body is to unite
with the spirit by concentration - "virtual" is empty all impure thoughts; "tranquility" is the purity at heart, with a simple life and looks
to have a blissful mind for health and longevity that require slighting wealth and fame as exemplified by centenarians. Happiness
is to be content; the Dao of the saint is to be a "performer" and never a "competitor" with others - this is the formula for good
health. Lastly, he who has virtuosity is just like a new-born baby: being innocent and young at heart, the greatest secret of the
Dao.
