STAY AWAY FROM
THROMBOSIS
A Ms Lin, 78, had sudden
paralysis of her right lower limb
- a stroke. A MrYue, 72, had right
lower limb pain while walking:
requiring repeated rests - inter-
mittent claudication, the nar-
rowed artery required stenting
but got worse progressively and
ended up in a high-level ampu-
tation of his limb. In fact, clots
can occur anywhere with differ-
ent presentations, e.g., an inabil-
ity to speak and paralysis of one
side of the body - a stroke:
caused by clotting of the arter-
ies supplying the brain; blockage
of the coronaries causes chest
pain or even sudden death; clot-
ting of the lower limbs' deep
veins causes pain and swelling
of the legs; clots in the lungs
cause shortness of breath, chest
pain, coughing out blood or even
death; clotting of gut vessels
causes severe tummy ache or
blood in stools. Avoid smoking,
excessive drinking; take moder-
ate exercises; with prolonged
sitting, drink enough water, ex-
ercise the limbs; avoid alcoholic
drinks or sedatives; control
hypertension, diabetes and
cholesterol; for prolonged bed
rest, try massaging and exercis-
ing lower limbs; avoid prolonged
oral contraceptives, esp. women
over 40. Go to the hospital at
once if clots are suspected.
