EXPOUNDING TCM EYE
SPECIALIST
CHARACTERISTICS: AN
INTERVIEWWITH A TCM
EYE SPECIALIST, PROF.
LIU HUAI-DONG
Ophthalmology has been a well
established specialty in the history
of traditional Chinese medicine -
classic volumes, e.g., Pharmaco-
poeia of Chinese Herbal Medicine of
Li Shi-zhen, had specialty coverages
of eye diseases. A combination of
herbs and acupuncture had been the
practice, e.g., for squint, optic nerve
degeneration, diabetic retinopathy
(diabetic retinal disease), retinal
venous thrombosis (clots in retinal
veins). Prof Liu believes in combined
TCM andWestern medicine, e.g., for
treatment of acute glaucoma, the use
of herbs and acupuncture is supple-
mented by mannitol intravenous in-
fusion and 1% pilocarpine eye drops
to relieve the high pressure inside the
eyeball and the optic nerve thus
preserved. For fundal hemorrhages
(bleeds within the retina), as Prof Liu
believes that laser therapy is
destructive, he claims that, by using
herbs to promote clot absorption, lo-
cal lack of oxygen is corrected, new
blood vessel formation can thus be
prevented. He claims his method is
even better than the current standard
treatment by laser. To support the
purchase of modern equipment, Mr
Chou Wen Hsien, JP, sets a good
example by donating towards Prof
Liu's Institution.
