FASTIDIOUS ABOUT
CLEANLINESS: HARMFUL
TO HEALTH
Contrary to the belief of
most people, living in the sterile
environment may well be harm-
ful to one's health - the individual
would, paradoxically, become
"defenseless" as the immune
system has not been adequately
stimulated into full activity. It is
better to experience the "six dev-
ils of the environment": "evil
wind", cold, heat, wetness, dry-
ness and "fire". A study at the
Duke University in the US found
rats living in filth had a better im-
munity than those brought up in
sterile environments. Similarly,
men living in grossly unsanitary
environments may not fall sick
more often than others, as
pathogens would regularly
stimulate their immune systems.
Another US study found those
children growing up in nurseries
(and exposed to many other
young children) would have
lower asthma rates than those
growing up in the comfort of
one's home. Asthma has a 25%
prevalence in more affluent
countries, e.g., UK, Australia,
New Zealand, etc., as compared
to 12% in Hong Kong and 5% in
Guangzhou. The Scientific
American also reports our para-
sites may benefit immunity.
Thus, some exposure to "un-
clean" environment is more ben-
eficial than we think.
