THE HEALTH?
With affluent modern life,

abound. Yet, US National Can-
cer Institute found beta-caro-
tene ironically increased both
the incidence and mortality
rates of those at high risk of lung
cancer: 28% and 17% higher
respectively, as compared with
controls. In fact, appropriate
free radicals would initiate the
body's natural immune system;
as supraox ide di smutase
(SOD) eradicates excessive
free radicals in the body, exces-
sive antioxidants would prevent
initiation of the immune system
altogether so that disease
would thus occur. Hence, the
best nutritional supplements
are from the food rather than
from pills. Excessive vitamins A
& D may cause poisoning as
such excesses are being stored
in the liver. Even excess vita-
min C may have side effects, e.
g., headache, diarrhea, etc.;
excessive vitamin E causes
tiredness and diarrhea or even
easy bleeding; excessive iron
deposited in the liver and the
heart also causes damage. Ex-
cessive zinc causes anemia
and low immunity; excessive
selenium or copper is poison-
ous and liver damage may also
occur.
