PITFALLS
OF
"SECRET
POTIONS''
"Family secret potions" lrom
their
"ancestors"
could
be very problematic.
One
kid
from
Hubei
took such
potions
numbered
l-lV for
convulsion.
Few
months
later, had
reduction
of
white
cells, liver dysfunction and severe rash
all
over; analysis found I
contained
diazepam;
ll,
phenobarbital;
lll,
sodium
phenytoin. Another 4-year-old girl went
into
deep coma
with
suppressed
breathing after taking
a
potion for
convulsions. Signs
strongly
suggested
phenobarbital poisoning;
her
serum
had
excessive phenobarbital
and
carbimazipine; she almost
died.
Slimming
is
now
very
popular but
an
analysis
of drugs
marketed in China
revealed
most
of
them
contain
fenlluramine
and
/
or
amfepramone,
with serious adverse effects on
long-
term
use. Once, a potion for
schizophre-
nia caused
severe
jaundice. Analysis
of unlabeled "potions" found diazepam,
propanolol, clozapine and chlorthalidone.
Anti-psychotic drugs occasionally have
adverse effects and labeling
is
vital but
this doctor removed the labels and sold
as "potions". Another potion for rheu-
matoid
arthritis
had
a
steroid
that
caused "moon-face", high
blood
glucose
levels
and hypertension,
etc.
A
cardio-vascular disease potion manu-
facturer claimed their family formula
to
be all
from
natural herbs and free from
side-effects.
However, a
Madam Huang
took
it
and was admitted for
scanty
urine;
she finally
died
from
kidney
failure.
