IN
MID.LIFE,TAKE
CARE
OF
YOUR
LIVER
The liver
is
a
very
important
organ
in
the
body.
lt
is a
very large and
complex factory in which
numerous
metabolic
activities
are
being
processed.
The
liver
secretes
bile
that
is
responsible
for
digesting
fat
in
the gut.
It also stores excessive blood sugars
as glycogen
and
re-converts
them
into
sugar
for
the blood as required. Detoxi-
fication
is
also its main function, e.9.,
it
metabolizes alcohol
with
an enzyme
alcohol
dehydrogenase, otherwise
alcohol
may damage
the
brain.
However,
during
mid-life,
the
perfor-
mance of
the
liver may start to decline
and
liver
diseases are
more common.
Refrain from overwork, otherwise,
an
undiscovered borderline
liver
f
unction
may
start to
deteriorate.
Take
a well-
balanced
diet
and
more
frequent
meals;
never
skip breaklast,
lest
the
liver
works
too
hard to churn out sugars
lrom
its
glycogen store. "Fatty
live/'may
result.
Chronic excessive drinking damages
the liver and causes hardening of
the
liver
or
cirrhosis:
olten
presents
as
abdominal
and
ankle
swellings. Moldy
peanuts or other food contain aflatoxin
that
may cause liver cancer.
Some
hepatitis,
e.9.,
"B"
spread
through blood-
mediated or sexual contacts; others,
e.9.,
"A"
come from contaminated tood
or
crockery. Symptoms are fever,
in-
tense tiredness, nausea, profound loss
ol
appetite
and,
ultimately, jaundice.
Take
care
ol
the liver so that it would
take care of your health.
