Lu
Gang
has
always been
rated
as
a
top
student,
not
only
in
primary and
secondary
schools but also at
the
university
level
-
his studies on physics
at
the Beijing
University.
After graduation,
he
was admitted to University of lowa
in the
United States
for his
doctor
degree in physics. At the age of
28,
he
was considered by all at
the
University
as a very brilliant student. As
he
was
also
very
ambitious, he targeted the
"Spriestersbach
Prize"
that was
given
to a science student
at
the University
ol
lowa only once
in
three
years.
However,
his dissertation was
by-
passed and his rival, another student
from China, Shan Linhua, got
it.
On
1
November 1991,
Lu
went on a shoot-
ing
rampage
killing
3
physics
professors,
his rival as
well
as
seriously
wounded
1
University
Administrator and
then killed himself.
At
the University, he
was described as
a
"lone/',
with hardly
any social activities other than his aca-
demic studies and research. The killing
of his own fellow countryman as
a
rival
was
highly
significant and indicated
Lu's
gross
inability
to manage
failure.
As
a
"lone/',
he had inadequate exposure
to
philosophical or
religious viewpoints
-
he
obviously
lacked
the ability
to
accept
'failure"-that
his rival
student
could
well
snatch
his "top
studenf'
title. This
very
sad incident
is
a
serious
warning to all
other similar students who has
not
learnt how to accept lailure.
