EXCESSIVE DRINKING
BY
NEWLYWEDS:BEWARE
OF
..HARE
LIP''
BABIES
Hare lip
is
a congenital disorder
in which
the
lip of
the
newborn baby
is
like
that of a
hare
-
the upper
lip
fails
to
join
together and
there
is a cleavage
between the two sides ol
the
upper
lip.
ln more severe cases, even
the
palate
(the roof of the oral cavity) lails to fuse
together
and
the baby
has
considerable
difficulty to take milk feeds or water, let
alone talking
properly.
An operation
is
required to join them together, other-
wise
food
would go into the
nose or
even
the lungs.
During
the
wedding
dinner, it
is
customary to "bottoms
up";
a
number
of
guests and
even the
newly-
wed couple
may
get drunk.
Studies
have
shown that such
heavy
drinking
may
have
adverse
effects for the
couple
-
in case
the
bride conceives,
there
is
an increased
risk
of having hare lip
in
their newborn
baby.
ln Mainland China,
1
out of 800
to
1,000 newborns
have
hare lip;
boys
were
commoner than
girls. According
to statistics,
76% of
hare
lip
patients
have
a
genetic
background. lf one
of
the parents
has
hare lip, the chances of the newborn
having hare
lip is
increased
12-32
times,
others
are due
to environmental factors.
According to studies undertaken in
a
Fuyang
City District Hospital
in Anhui
Province, heavy drinking may
have
brought about subtle changes to the
sperm and served to link
up
the excep-
tionally high incidence
ol
hare lip
and
their
custom
of
elaborate wedding
celebrations.
