THETHREAT
FROM NOVEL
INFECTIVE ORGANISMS
ln
human
history,
numerous
infec-
tions
have emerged and others
have
now
reemerged.
AIDS, prion (responsible
for
"mad cow") diseases, Ebola hemor-
rhagic fever,
E
coli "O-157"
infections,
hepatitis
C,
Dengue hemonhagic fevers
and SARS,
etc.
Other "olded'infections
are also re-emerging
now
e.9.,
malaria,
cholera, typhoid and
even
tuberculosis.
The
increasing resistance of too many
organisms to antibiotics
through
indis-
criminate
use or
inappropriate industrial
use
are now
maior
concerns; the
lack
ol
appropriate resources
in
some
developing countries for basic
healthcare
is
also very worrisome. Animal and bird
migration as
well
as frequent human
travel
and
international
trade
have
extended considerably
the
dissemina-
tion of viral
diseases. Many
ol
these
agents are zoonotic
in
origin and trans-
mitted from animals to man, e.9., AIDS
came
from
monkeys; Ebola came from
chimpanzee; mad cow's disease came
from sheep,
etc.
Because
of
these origi-
nated
from animals, projects
of
trans-
planting animal organs to humans have
now largely been curtailed, lor fear of
transmitting some unknown micro-or-
ganisms
lrom
animals
to
men. ln this
age
of
global warming,
significant
improvement
of
hygienic
practices,
cessation of certain dangerous prac-
tices that increase the risks of infection,
should
now
be
undertaken
as
top
priority, otherwise
we
are doomed.
